Darkness cannot exist when light enters a room, it is consumed by it and very quickly the darkness disappears. Just turn on a light switch when you enter a room and you will see how quickly the room becomes illuminated and the darkness escapes. If it doesn’t then the light source probably has a defect.
The rooms within my mind have been blinded by darkness before. The defect in my light switch was a bitter heart because of the world. I have spent many wasted years in darkness and at times being followed by the shadow of death (Satan). The shadow of the death of the spirit tends to come upon us when we feel like life has handed us things unfairly or downright ugly. Maybe you have felt like life has let you down before. I know I have, time and time again, I have felt that way. Sometimes we chase death without realizing it because it is easier to allow the enemy to control our thoughts than to do anything about it. It’s easier for us to just sit and feel hurt instead of seeking the knowledge of our Father in Heaven. I know because I’ve been there.
The enemy loves when are in darkness because he hides in the shadows.
Satan knows: while we are blinded by it, we cannot see the truth, instead we only hear the lies he tells us.
Satan wants us to believe we are not worthy of love.
Satan wants us to turn further away from the all-powerful God until our spirit is broken and battered from his lies. Satan wants us to be alone and fearful.
Satan is cunning, but he is not too smart.
You would think he knows Jesus is close to the broken-hearted. I didn’t realize it, not at first. My journey toward Jesus was a slow one, mainly because I am stubborn. Jesus knows, but he never gave up on me. I searched for Him in my late twenties because I was desperately searching for peace and love. Once I found it in Him, it didn’t take me long to turn away again. I wasn’t raised going to church regularly, but I was raised to believe in God. Being the young twenty-something Christian I was, I had no idea God desired a relationship with me and I needed to continue to seek Him in all I did. It was not about being dunked in water and miraculously, all is well with my soul and there was nothing else I needed to do. It was so much more, though I didn’t know it at the time. It would take me another fifteen years to realize I was still walking in the dark.
Don’t get me wrong, I do believe once you are saved, you are always saved, BUT it is also important to continue to do God’s will. Repent of the sinfulness and turn toward Him; God’s will for us is to become more like Him. We cannot just simply do good things and automatically go to heaven, no way. The truth of God tells us in Ephesians 2:8, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is a gift of God.” A gift God has given us was bought at a price. Jesus paid the price so we can live free from the darkness of the world. All we have to do is ask for His forgiveness and invite Him to dwell in us.
