What is My Purpose?

August 15, 2016

So many times I have wondered what my purpose is. What am I here for? What is all of this I'm doing for? Does God have big plans for my life?

These questions enter my mind every time I open a new blank page and stare at it waiting for the words to come.  Doubts come into focus as I go to work each day, wondering if I am a good leader to my team. I wonder if I am showing enough love to my family. Do you ever feel this way?

Satan likes to throw darts of doubt into our minds and cause us to question if we are good enough. He revels in our weaknesses. He delights in us second-guessing ourselves. It is so important we remember what the Bible says.

  • “Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails." - Proverbs 19:21

  • "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." - Romans 8:28

  • "Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches." - 1 Corinthians 7:17

  • "However, as it is written: "What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived" -- the things God has prepared for those who love him--" - 1 Corinthians 2:9

  • "Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live--" - Psalm 119:116

The Lord's purpose for us is our purpose. We may not know what that purpose is right now, but rest assured our purpose will come to pass. Our Heavenly Father has a purpose and a plan for each of us. We all have our own special gifts he has given us to do the work we are set to do while we are in the world.

Spiritual gifts are found throughout the Bible.

  • Romans 12:6-8 shows us the gifts of; prophecy, service, teaching, encouragement, generosity, leading, and mercy

  • 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 & 28-30 tells us about the gifts of; wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, interpretation, helping, and administrating

  • Ephesians 4:11 demonstrates for us the gifts of; shepherds or pastoral leadership and evangelism

Is it up to me to determine what my gifts are? One could say "yes". Others might say "no". I believe both. Let me explain; each one of us possesses one or more of the gifts mentioned above, but they are pre-ordained by God before we are born. Only he knows everything about us yesterday, today and tomorrow, so it stands to reason only he can give us the gifts we possess. It is up to me to develop my relationship with Jesus in order for him to reveal to me what my gifts are.

I have not always known what gifts I possessed, but slowly I have come to realize I have several. This was not an overnight process, though. It took months of praying and developing my personal relationship with Jesus before I understood I am a teacher, a leader, and an encourager. More could have been given to me that I haven't discovered yet. That is the beauty of Father God. As our relationship grows so does his love for us and he communicates with us beyond our wildest expectations.

He has a purpose for each of us. It may not go according to the plans we have, but his plans are perfect and his plans will prevail, if we let them.
