The Lies of Our Enemy(ies)

September 19, 2016

You are not worthy of love.

You will never amount to anything.

You can’t do anything right.

You are ugly.

You are too fat.

You are boring.

Have you heard these things before? Maybe you have told these things to yourself. I know I have. These are all lies. Whether they are told to us by others or we tell them to ourselves, they are lies. Sometimes it is hard for us to see the truth, though, isn’t it? Why is that?

In my twenties, my life was far different from what it is today. I spiraled on a roller coaster of depression. I would have moments of highs in my life when everything seemed to be going just fine, but I would quickly fall into deep sadness and self-deprecation. Now, I have days confidence, but there are still other days I have an overwhelming feeling I do not belong. My inner critic tells me I am not worthy of anyone’s love or admiration.

As an adult child of an alcoholic father, I have battled with self-esteem issues over the years. My dad never told me I was ugly, fat or boring, but others in my life have said those hurtful words to me. Moments of rejection have entered into my heart relaying to me I am not worthy of love, I can’t do anything right, or I will never amount to anything. Those are lies.

Our enemy, Satan, wants us to believe lies like these. He doesn’t want us to flourish. He doesn’t want us to do things right. He doesn’t want us to have love because God is love (1 John 4:8). Satan is the father of lies. When these lies attempt to enter into my mind, I have to remember to combat the father of lies with the Father of truth.

We are warned in the Bible against Satan’s devious ways.

  • 2 Corinthians 11:3 – But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ

We are reminded how Satan continues to attempt to blind us from the truth.

  • 2 Corinthians 4:4 – The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

We are given the weaponry to fight off the arrows of lies Satan throws our way.

  • Ephesians 6:11-12 – Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of his dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

I still have days when I don’t feel stellar, everyone does, but the difference in me today is the power of the Holy Spirit which dwells within me. When those arrows of lies are thrown at me, I repel them with my belt of truth and my shield of faith (Ephesians 6:14-16). Satan is not allowed to lie his way into my heart any longer.
